Vampire Weekend’s new album goes underground and all over the place

Vampire Weekend not too long ago launched their fifth album, “Only God was above us.” From the band that started practically 20 years in the past at Columbia College however now resides in Los Angeles, it is an LP that displays on turning 40, the historical past classes, generational legacies, myths and reminiscences of New York Metropolis, and the standing Vampire Weekend’s quirky really feel is each an indie-rock success story and atypical artwork pop. It is also the band’s loudest album – and maybe its gentlest.

On this week’s Popcast with visitor host Jon Pareles, three critics focus on the most recent enigmas, counterpoint, sonic extremes and hidden core of Vampire Weekend’s jam-band – and their fascination with tunnels.
